The Addictive Behaviors SIG provides a platform for members within ABCT to communicate and collaborate regarding topics related to addictive behaviors (e.g., alcohol, marijuana, nicotine, gambling) across the lifespan that include but are not limited to: research examining etiological factors and mechanisms that perpetuate substance use and related disorders, intervention and treatment, harm reduction strategies, and the impact of addictive behaviors on health and behavior. The Addictive Behaviors SIG welcomes ABCT members who are interested in joining a group of researchers, clinicians, mental health professionals, and students who want to connect with other ABCT members in this exciting area of research and treatment. As a whole, our SIG promotes increased awareness of issues surrounding addictive behaviors, active involvement in ABCT, and communication among members at the annual conference and throughout the year. Individuals interested in membership need only notify the current SIG Leader of their desire to join and pay annual dues.
Membership dues support SIG activities at the convention, recognition plaques and certificates for SIG awards, travel awards, and other SIG expenses. An annual financial report of all expenditures is presented at the annual SIG meeting.
We maintain an active listserv, and we sponsor a poster session and host a SIG meeting at the convention. At our SIG meeting we offer the opportunity to network and present two annual awards among other activities. We also offer a travel award for students from underrepresented backgrounds.
